Pete Nelson & Joseph Ayres

Creating Gatlinburg’s First Treehouse Resort

The Ayres, a local family with a history of entrepreneurship and real estate, longed to create a lodging experience that was as awe-inspiring as its surroundings, from natural beauty to elaborate theme parks, while being something that would convene with nature.

“Treehouse Master” Pete Nelson, an expert in his field, specializing in building treehouses that prioritize the health and wellness of trees and nature, soon came on board. He designed eight treehouses along Norton Creek, the first phase of the new resort, which became known as the “By the Creek” treehouses.

Opening Gatlinburg’s First Treehouse Resort

In 2020, the Ayres family officially opened Treehouse Grove, Gatlinburg’s first luxury treehouse resort, to the public, gaining a quick fanbase. Despite the difficulties experienced during 2020, Treehouse Grove thrived! People escaped the madness to a clean treehouse in the woods, where personal space, peacefulness, and fresh air were abundant.

But a new demand for treehouses with a variety of amenities arose. People wanted more spacious treehouses, kitchens, and pet-friendly options.

Expanding Treehouse Grove

After the success of Treehouse Grove’s opening, the Ayres family decided to team up with Nelson Treehouse again to build eight more treehouses. But this time, they were in a higher elevation with scenic views from the top of the mountains, including Mount Le Conte, the highest peak in Tennessee.

Treehouse Grove opened its “Mountain View” treehouses, offering eight new treehouses, all pet-friendly. Many were 3-4 bedrooms with a tiny-home kitchen, most with a dining deck, and some with one-of-a-kind features like an outdoor shower or sleep-under-the-stars option.

Celebrating 5 Years of Treehouse Grove

As of 2025, Treehouse Grove has been a sought-after destination for nature lovers, “Treehouse Master” fans, families, and beyond. With its unique design, luxurious amenities, and ideal location, this resort is an unmatched, must-see. Throughout the years, Treehouse Grove has gained over 10,000 five-star reviews, been featured in news outlets and magazines, and has become a highlight of the Gatlinburg community.
